Just one day after Ole Werner told Werder Bremen that he would not be extending his contract beyond 2026, the Bundesliga side have sacked the head coach with immediate effect.
“We deeply regret Ole’s decision as we could have envisioned a long-term collaboration with him,” said Clemens Fritz, Managing Director of Football. “However, since we need continuity and clarity in the future head coach position, we have decided to release Ole.”
After taking over from Markus Anfang in November 2021, Werner guided Werder Bremen back into the Bundesliga following their relegation the prior campaign. Werner then almost guided SVW to European campaigns in the two seasons that followed, finishing ninth before an eighth place finish last season after a late push for a European spot.
“We thank Ole for the last three and a half years and for the outstanding work he has done at Werder Bremen,” added Fritz. “It has been a very trusting collaboration with him. Ole has continuously developed the team and had a huge influence on Werder’s successful stabilisation in the Bundesliga.”
About his decision not to extend his contract, Werner said: “It’s anything but easy for me not to extend my contract but I’ve often said that my job is about developing a club. When a certain point is reached, there are usually two options: Either you make changes around a coach, or you make changes in the coaching position. It was clear to me that after my contract expired after four and a half years, this change was necessary to enable further development.
“From the club’s perspective, I can understand why Werder has now decided to take this step.”
