Borussia Dortmund have confirmed what looked to be a grim injury prognosis for squad captain Emré Can. The 32-year-old suffered an ACL tear in his knee during last night’s loss against league leaders Bayern Munich. Can will miss the rest of the season. It’s entirely possible that the 48-times-capped German international may never again feature for his current Bundesliga club.
Despite the fact that Can sits on an expiring contract, Dortmund have showed interest in renewing with their skipper. Can initially joined Dortmund on loan from Juventus during the second half of the 2019/20 Bundesliga campaign. Dortmund opted to bring the Frankfurt native back to German football permanently that summer.
Can inherited the captain’s armband from BVB legend Marco Reus in the summer of 2023; which also happened to be the last time he renewed his club contract. Amid persistent injury issues and declining form, Can has steadily seen his relevance decline since Edin Terzic tapped him to sport the armband.
Dortmund may still wish to retain him.
“Emre’s injury is extremely bitter,” BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl noted on Sunday. “Not only for him, but for all of us. He is our captain, always puts himself at the service of the team and is an important part of our club. Emre will receive every support from us over the next few months so that he can make a full recovery.”
