An injury to Mainz midfielder Nadiem Amiri has translated to RB Leipzig phenom Assan Ouédraogo receiving his first senior German men’s national team call-up. National team head coach Julian Nagelsmann declared himself impressed with the progress of the 19-year-old in the Bundesliga at a DFB press event yesterday.
Ouédraogo – forced sit out most of the 2024/25 Bundesliga campaign injured – only just received his first Germany U21 call up during the October international break. The teenage talent scored a goal for Antonio Di Salvo’s DFB-Juniors and emerged from the last international break as one of the clear “winners” from the two Germany U21 fixtures.
Ouédraogo has also been in fine form for club as well, starting the last seven league fixtures under RB head coach Ole Werner. The Mülheim-native has scored two goals and registered two assists in his last seven starts. Nagelsmann made clear that he considered Ouédraogo a direct replacement for Amiri, whom the coach considers an “offensive-minded” No. 6.
“I’m not one for hyping young players too early,” Nagelsmann noted yesterday. “But we have decided to nominate Assan Ouédraogo as a direct 1:1 replacement for Nadiem Amiri. Assan is currently doing very well in the Bundesliga. He is a young player with great potential – similar to Said El Mala – whom we would like to see in training.”
