RB Leipzig have sacked Ole Werner with immediate effect, with assistant coaches Tom Cichon and Patrick Kohlmann also leaving.

Sky Germany reports that the move had been planned behind the scenes for weeks. The decision on the 38-year-old was taken by a board centred around Oliver Mintzlaff, Jürgen Klopp and Mario Gomez.

Werner was in charge for 351 days, leading Leipzig to third place in the Bundesliga last season.

Martin Demichelis is set to become the new head coach.

Director of sport Marcel Schäfer said the club had completed a thorough final review of the season in recent days and decided on Tuesday evening to appoint a new head coach.

He thanked Werner, Cichon and Kohlmann for their work, crediting them with a key role in the team’s restructuring and Champions League qualification.

Schäfer added that further development and a revised approach are required for the challenges ahead, and wished the trio well for the future.
