Oliver Glasner has denied reports that he threatened to resign as Crystal Palace manager if Marc Guehi was sold to Liverpool.
After losing Eberechi Eze to Arsenal late in the window, Glasner was desperate to ensure the club did not sell another key player in club captain Guehi, who spent the summer courting interest from Liverpool. A deal sheet was submitted for the player’s transfer, but Palace pulled out at the eleventh hour after failing to sign a replacement.
Reports emerged on Deadline Day that Glasner threatened to walk away from the club if Guehi was sold in a desperate bid to cancel the transfer, but the Austrian has now denied making such an ultimatum.
He said: “It's the last time I want to talk about it. The fans deserve to hear about how it really was.
“I never threatened to leave the club. Never.
“At the end of the many discussions, the chairman (Steve Parish) asked me, ‘Oliver, do you think we can manage the season when we sell Marc?’ And I said, ‘Steve, honestly, I think we can’t manage it in the short term’.”
He continued, explaining that Guehi’s sale would have been ‘risky’. Jaydee Canvot, a 19-year-old centre-back, was signed from Toulouse late in the window as Palace’s only defensive reinforcement, but Glasner felt he was not sufficient cover as the Eagles are set to compete on four fronts this season.

Glasner continued: “If we buy a 19-year-old fantastic player with about 1,000 minutes in Ligue 1 and sell our captain with about 15,000 minutes in the Premier League, I think we can’t manage (Guehi’s sale) in the short term.
“And then we have three centre-backs. With our schedule, and if we have an injury in the back three, I think it’s very, very risky.
“If you want this scenario for Crystal Palace, and you are fine with it, sell Marc. If you don’t want to have this for Crystal Palace, then we have to keep him.
“And then he decided we keep him. So, big credit to the chairman.
“I didn’t have to threaten anybody. There was no tensions between the chairman and myself. It was really just a discussion about sports.”
Guehi continued to play for Palace throughout the saga, but was reportedly gutted that the transfer did not go through. Glasner, though, is satisfied with how the tale ended.
“The most important thing, it was a happy ending,” he continued. “It was clear for him (Guehi) that he stuck to his contract.”
