FA Cup winners repeated their Wembley win in thriller
Oliver Glasner hailed his Crystal Palace for ignoring the "noise" to win the Community Shield amid the club's battle to stay in the Europa League.
After it finished 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes at Wembley against Liverpool, Palace won the shootout 3-2 as Justin Devenny converted the winning spot-kick to secure more silverware for the Eagles.
It was an impressively resilient display from Palace, who fell behind inside four minutes to Hugo Ekitike's opener. Jean-Philippe Mateta levelled with a penalty, but Jeremie Frimpong swiftly restored Liverpool's lead.
Ismaila Sarr took it to a shootout where Dean Henderson saved from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott before Devenny had no such issues from the spot.
The result came a day before the Court of Arbitration for Sport will make their decision on which UEFA competition Palace will play in next season. Having qualified for the Europa League, Palace were demoted to the Conference League due to John Textor having shares in both Lyon and Palace.
Asked if he would trade the Community Shield victory for a successful outcome in that case, Glasner responded: "No. We will accept what happens.
"Today's performance we could influence. I think the players showed it and proved it in an excellent way. They didn't think about the noise around us, they were really focused on what they had to do on the pitch. This is why we could win.
"Tomorrow we have no influence. That means the players will celebrate tonight and we will meet tomorrow for lunch and training in the afternoon. Then we will see if we already know the decision and we will accept it.
"We can't influence it so we don't think about it. Tomorrow afternoon we will schedule the rest of August. If we stay in the Conference League, we have five more games to play. If we play in the Europa League, we have three more weeks to train which would be helpful.
"No influence so I don't think about it."
Palace won their first ever major trophy with victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final in May and Glasner's side provided the supporters with another memorable visit to Wembley.
It was down to 21-year-old Devenny to provide the crowning moment and his manager was left hugely impressed by the midfielder's desire to step up in the shootout.
"I'm really delighted than Justin Devenny took the decisive penalty, 21-years-old, " Glasner said.
"We didn't talk before, never, because you don't know who is on the pitch after a few subs. It was clear then that JP [Mateta], Eberechi [Eze] and Ismaila take the next three. Borna [Sosa] is usually a good penalty taker and then we were looking for the fifth one.
"Justin said 'I'll take the fifth one' with a lot of confidence. I said 'ok, it's you'. I think he showed it, this is how we want to be.
"Take responsibility, never be scared or be worried or concerned that you can make a mistake. This is football. So this is one of the many positive things today."
