Sunderland defender Omar Alderete has suffered a knee injury on World Cup duty and is a serious doubt for Paraguay’s game against Germany on Monday night. According to Sunderland Echo, the centre-back’s availability remains unclear.

Alderete was hurt in the 0-0 draw with Australia, a result that secured Paraguay’s place in the last 32 after a heavy opening defeat to the USA.

Scans appear to have ruled out significant knee damage, but a muscle strain is still troubling the 29-year-old, who trained away from the main group in the final session before facing Germany.

Head coach Gustavo Alfaro said they will test Alderete on matchday, that he remains in pain despite checks indicating he is OK, and that with little time to get him ready they will wait until the last minute.

Paraguay against Germany kicks off at 9.30pm UK time, live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

It has been a strong World Cup for Sunderland’s contingent so far, with Wilson Isidor the only player to exit after the group stage. He signed off with a superb long-range strike in Haiti’s final match against Morocco.

Chemsdine Talbi’s Morocco play Netherlands on Monday. Simon Adingra’s Ivory Coast meet Norway on Tuesday, Ecuador face Mexico early Wednesday, the winner to meet either England or DR Congo, with Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku involved. Habib Diarra’s Senegal face Belgium on Wednesday night and Granit Xhaka’s Switzerland meet Algeria early Friday.
