On an off day, Corinthians fall to Ceará at Neo Química Arena

Corinthians hosted Ceará on Sunday afternoon (9th) at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the 33rd round of the Brazilian Championship, and ended up defeated by a score of 1-0. This result drops the team to 13th place in the national competition standings.

In the first half, Corinthians dominated possession and were even superior to Ceará for most of the period, but saw the opponent’s strategy work better. After a mistake by Yuri Alberto in attack, the Ceará team launched a counterattack and opened the scoring with Galeano, who set the numbers for the first half.

In the second half, Corinthians returned at a slower pace than the first half and had a lot of difficulty creating opportunities. Ceará continued with the strategy of betting on counterattacks and even posed a threat, with Felipe Longo making important interventions.

After facing Ceará at the Neo Química Arena for the Brasileirão, Corinthians will return to the field to face São Paulo in a derby that will again take place at the Neo Química Arena, on November 20th, in a match valid for the 34th round of the 2025 Brazilian Championship.

For the match, the Alvinegro was without the following players: Hugo Souza (muscle injury in the left thigh), André Carrillo, José Martínez and Charles (serving suspension for a third yellow card and a red card), André (final stage of physical transition after ligament injury in the right ankle), Raniele (injury in the adductor muscle of the right leg), and Vitinho (physical transition after surgery on the right knee).

For the match, Dorival Júnior’s coaching staff lined up Timão with: Felipe Longo; Matheuzinho, André Ramalho, Gustavo Henrique, and Matheus Bidu; Maycon, Breno Bidon, Rodrigo Garro, and Dieguinho; Memphis and Yuri Alberto.

On the bench for this Sunday’s match against the team from the south were: Kauê, Félix Torres, João Pedro Tchoca, Romero, Cacá, Angileri, Kayke, Talles Magno, Hugo Ryan, Gui Negão, and Luiz Gustavo.

Coach Léo Condé lined up his team with: Bruno Ferreira; Fabiano Souza, Marcos Victor, Willian Machado, Rafael Ramos, Zanocelo, Dieguinho, Matheus Bahia, Galeano, Pedro Henrique, and Lucas Mugni.

On the visitors’ bench, the following were available: Marllon, Matheus Araújo, Aylon, Paulo Baya, Richardson, Nicolas, Lucas Lima, Eder, Fernando, Lourenço, and Lucca.

Refereeing

The refereeing team for the match in Itaquera was composed of Felipe Fernandes de Lima (MG) as the main referee, assisted by Felipe Alan Costa de Oliveira (MG) and Douglas Pagung (ES). Marco Aurélio Augusto Fazekas Ferreira (MG) was in charge of VAR.

First Half

The first attempt at a shot was by Corinthians. At three minutes, Yuri Alberto received from Garro on the right, carried it to the middle, and tried to shoot, but slipped and sent it far from the opponent’s goal.

The Paulista Alvinegro had more possession and controlled the game but had difficulty reaching the opponent’s goal. At 14 minutes, Rodrigo Garro took a corner, Gustavo Henrique rose and headed well, forcing the goalkeeper to make a great save. In the next play, from a free kick, number 8 found André Ramalho behind the defense, but the ball was weak, making it easy for the keeper.

At 19, Garro lifted the ball behind the defense and found Maycon. The Corinthians midfielder was free but tried to control and ended up being dispossessed, winning a corner. At 20 minutes, Corinthians put together a beautiful play with Matheus Bidu, Garro, and Breno Bidon. The left-back crossed for Gustavo Henrique to score, but the referee disallowed the goal for offside by number 21.

At 23 minutes, Maycon won inside the box, crossed, and found André Ramalho. Right in front of goal, Ceará’s defender cleared the danger and prevented a Corinthians goal almost on the line.

At 29 minutes, the Corinthians defense played out poorly and the ball fell to Ceará midfielder Dieguinho, who tried a long-range shot and forced Felipe Longo to make a great save.

Ceará’s goal: Lucas Mugni took advantage of a mistake by Yuri Alberto, sped into attack, and passed to Pedro Henrique. He lifted his head and saw Galeano, free and easy on the left wing. The player invaded the box and finished with his left foot into the corner, with no chance for Felipe Longo to save.

At 33, Dieguinho drove down the right wing, cut inside, and shot from outside the area, but the ball was weak and the goalkeeper saved. At 51, Matheuzinho lifted the ball into the middle of the box, Gustavo Henrique headed dangerously, and the goalkeeper pushed it out for a corner.

Second Half

The first chance of the second half came at eight minutes. Memphis received from Matheuzinho, turned, and shot. With a deflection from the defense, it went out for a corner. At 14, André Ramalho received in midfield, shot low, and Bruno Ferreira sent it out for a corner.

At 17 minutes, after a great cross from Matheuzinho, André Ramalho rose unmarked and missed the header. The ball went over the bar, straight out. At 22, Fernandinho dribbled André Ramalho and shot, but Felipe Longo saved in two attempts without difficulty.

At 32, on a counterattack, Paulo Baya had space, entered the box, but at the moment of the shot, Matheuzinho cleared it for a corner. At 37, Garro took a left-footed free kick, but the ball went over the goal.

At 40 minutes, Paulo Baya sped into attack, entered the box, and shot with his left foot. Felipe Longo came out well and saved Corinthians with his right leg.
