On this day in 1937, Sunderland finally won the FA Cup with a stirring second half at Wembley, and the Football Echo returned to pink.
Sunderland Echo looks back on the day the elusive trophy reached Wearside 89 years ago. At half-time Sunderland trailed 1-0 to Preston North End.
After the break they improved. Eddie Burbanks beat his man and crossed for Carter, whose header shaved the post. Soon Burbanks forced a corner and Gurney darted in to head under the bar for 1-1.
The contest swung again, with Sunderland clearing two dangerous corners before getting back on the attack. The ball came from the left to Gurney wide on the right. He beat his man and crossed for Carter, who, from inside left, drove a low shot past Burns for 2-1.
Sunderland saw it out in style, Eddie Burbanks adding a third for 3-1. The Preston players formed a channel as captain Carter climbed to the Royal Box to receive the Cup from the Queen, then team-mates carried him shoulder high to the dressing room.
London was awash with red and white. Back home supporters pored over the Football Echo after years of disappointment.
The team returned to Monkwearmouth station behind a gleaming engine dedicated to the club by chairman Sir Walter Raine, who had been too ill to reach Wembley. An open-topped bus tour followed, crowds perched precariously on window ledges, and more than 30,000 greeted them at Roker Park with an incessant roar.
