As reported by David Ornstein for the Athletic, Manchester City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, is expected to step down at the end of the season. Begiristain has been one of the key pillars of the success of Manchester City since he arrived at the club in 2012. But when he does depart the club another exciting era could begin.

With Begiristain appearing set to depart Manchester City at the end of the season it will mark the end of an era of sorts at the world champions. Since he arrived at the club in 2012, Manchester City has conquered the footballing landscape. The club has dominated domestic football, conquered Europe and won the FIFA Club World Championship. Every mountain on the pitch has been scaled. Off the pitch, City have grown to become one of the biggest clubs in the world game. The legacy Begiristain will leave behind at City is sizable. But as one era ends, another could be set to begin at the club.

Whoever takes over from Txiki Begiristain will step into one of the most coveted roles in football. They will arrive at a club that is run at the highest level. They will bring their strengths to the role and will hopefully oversee a new era of success at Manchester City. The platform is there for whoever steps into Begiristain’s shoes. Who that could be remains to be seen. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Sporting Lisbon director of football Hugo Viana is currently the favourite to succeed Begiristain. Time will reveal who will step into Begiristain’s role.

Does Txiki Begiristain’s looming departure affect Pep Guardiola’s future?

Following David Ornstein’s report on Txiki Begiristain’s future, speculation has now turned to Pep Guardiola’s future. It is by now well known that Guardiola is in the final year of his contract with Manchester City. Begiristain and Guardiola have had a long-standing and successful relationship across their off-field careers at Manchester City and Barcelona. It is only natural that speculation will shift from Begiristain to Guardiola after David Ornstein’s new report. But a new report indicates that Guardiola’s future won’t be influenced by Begiristain’s decision.

Samuel Meads has reported for the Mirror that Pep Guardiola’s future won’t be affected by Begiristain’s decision. The City manager will make his own decision on his future despite Begiristain appearing set to leave City at the end of the season.

That news indicates that the next era for Manchester City could include Pep Guardiola as manager. If that is the case whoever steps into Txiki Begiristain’s role will have the best manager in football at the helm when they arrive. If that proves to be the case then Manchester City’s next era will have the foundation for continued success already at the club. That is an exciting prospect in itself to ponder.
