Since his strong performance against FC Bayern, Luka Vuskovic is no longer an unknown quantity in Munich. The 18-year-old central defender from Hamburger SV has established himself in the Bundesliga with remarkable naturalness – and is now even impressing players from the German record champions
The Croatian, who moved to Hamburg on loan from Tottenham Hotspur last summer, has long been more than just a talent at HSV. Vuskovic acts as a defensive leader, takes responsibility and leads the way. He has already scored four goals in 17 Bundesliga games, including the highly acclaimed equalizer in the 2-2 draw against Bayern and a goal in the emotional northern derby against Werder Bremen. These figures are extraordinary for a central defender of his age
Jonathan Tah’s praise of Vuskovic shows that it is not just statistics that make him stand out. The Bayern defender spoke highly of the shooting star in an interview with Sky. He particularly emphasised his energy, self-confidence and charisma on the pitch. Vuskovic is „really good“ for his age and has exactly the mentality that is needed at this level. It is particularly noteworthy that, according to Tah, there is even occasional contact between the two – an indication of how seriously the Munich man takes the young Croatian
These words carry weight. Tah is regarded internally as a leading player and a benchmark in the Bayern defence. When a professional of this calibre publicly singles out an 18-year-old, it is more than just a casual compliment

It’s no secret that Vuskovic’s name has been circulating around Säbener Straße for some time. In recent weeks, there have been increasing reports that Bayern scouts are keeping a close eye on the HSV defender. At times, he was even mooted as a possible replacement for Dayot Upamecano. Although the Frenchman has since opted to extend his contract, the topic of central defending remains open in Munich for the long term
Upamecano has an exit clause and could leave FC Bayern early in the summer of 2027. The future of Minjae Kim is also still unclear. The South Korean is seen internally as a candidate for sale should an attractive option arise in the summer. Such a departure would create financial leeway – and this is precisely where Vuskovic’s name could regain importance
However, a potential transfer would be anything but cheap. Vuskovic is still under contract with Tottenham Hotspur until 2030 and does not have a release clause. His current market value is already around €40 million, with a clear upward trend. Given his age, development and leadership qualities, Tottenham are likely to demand a high transfer fee in potential talks
For FC Bayern, Vuskovic would not be a short-term project, but a strategic investment in the future of the defence. The fact that Jonathan Tah has now also publicly expressed his appreciation underlines the fact that the Croatian has long been on the radar of the really big clubs.
