Didier Deschamps will step back from his role as manager of the France national team after this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
It will put an end to a 12-year stint as manager of Les Bleus. The FFF are yet to announce who will succeed Deschamps as manager, however, there is clearly a stand-out favourite. Zinédine Zidane has not managed since leaving Real Madrid in 2021, and it is thought that he is holding out on the France job, having rejected multiple opportunities to return to management.
Thierry Henry, without naming Zidane by name, alluded to the former Real Madrid midfielder being appointed to the role. We all know who will be the new coach. You know it, and I know it. And I wish him the best,” said Henry.
The former Arsenal forward was surpassed by current France captain Kylian Mbappé on Les Bleus’ all-time goal ranking during Tuesday night’s win over Iceland. The Real Madrid forward has now spoken openly about Zidane and also the links to the national team job.
“Zidane is a story that only happens once. He is the only one in the history of football who can do anything. You can just admire his grandeur. No one will be able to repeat it, have that image: a special era, a special image, a special player,” began Mbappé in an interview with L’Équipe.
On Zizou being named France manager, he added, “It’s Zidane. Only he can say no.”
