The quest to keep Trent Alexander-Arnold on Merseyside has been hotting up over recent weeks.

Questions keep flowing and comments keep coming regarding the right-back’s future at Liverpool, with his contract up at the end of the season and Real Madrid seemingly assembling the Nuevos Galacticos.

Future up in the air

Discussing the situation on talkSPORT yesterday, former Liverpool star Danny Murphy praised Alexander-Arnold’s current level, saying: “Trent looks as good as I’ve seen him in years physically, which is now helping his 1-on-1 defending. He looks quicker, sharper and stronger than I’ve seen him in a long, long time.

"The only thing on top of that,” Murphy continued, “the interview he did… some of his answers are a tad worrying for me, about his future.”

Murphy was referencing a recent interview in which Alexander-Arnold declared that he 'wants to be a Liverpool player this season', and that if he was to discuss a new deal it would not be done in public, much like his previous contracts.

Madrid might well look like an appealing prospect to Alexander-Arnold as a free agent, with a wallet-busting signing-on fee to come as well as the presence of his good friend in the England set-up, Jude Bellingham.

Murphy: Trent open to leaving

“If he did go to Madrid a lot of Liverpool fans would understand,” Murphy said, continuing, “the fact is… his wording in that interview to me suggests he’s open to the idea of going somewhere else and that’s concerning.”

The drama surrounding one of Liverpool’s genuine stars will go on and on until an announcement on his future is made one way or another. He was recently criticised for declaring that he is working with new manager Arne Slot to point out any defensive mistakes he makes.

This effort will be more than welcome should the defender commit to a future on Merseyside.
