Leeds United sit on the brink of mathematical safety after beating Burnley 3-1, with Opta’s supercomputer issuing an updated Premier League forecast that makes a strong call on the Whites.

According to yorkshireevenpost.co.uk, the model now has Arsenal champions on 82 points, three clear of Manchester City on 79, with Manchester United 69, Liverpool 63, Aston Villa 62 and Bournemouth 56.

Friday’s victory moved Leeds nine points above third-bottom Tottenham, seven clear of fourth-bottom West Ham and four ahead of fifth-bottom Nottingham Forest, with all three rivals holding a game in hand.

West Ham then lost 3-0 at Brentford on Saturday, leaving them seven adrift of Leeds with just three matches remaining. A West Ham defeat against Arsenal on Sunday would confirm Leeds’ safety, and even a draw could realistically suffice given goal difference.

Crystal Palace were also beaten at Bournemouth, dropping below Leeds on goal difference. Spurs later won 2-1 at Aston Villa to climb out of the bottom three, before Forest won 3-1 at Chelsea to sit a point behind Leeds.

Tottenham are now one point ahead of West Ham and six off Leeds, whom they host on Monday night. Even so, Leeds appear well placed heading into the run-in.
