Leila Ouahabi’s Spain complete the Euro 2025 final line-up after their 1-0 win over Rebecca Knaak and Sydney Lohmann’s Germany.
In Wednesday evening’s semi-final clash, full-back Ouahabi was an unused substitute at Stadion Letzigrund, where Spain secured their place in the competition’s final for the first time.
End-to-end football in the opening exchanges saw Klara Buhl drag her chance wide before Esther Gonzalez called in-form Ann-Katrin Berger into action on 21 minutes.
Spain then began to enjoy more possession, but Knaak and Germany were organised, defending with power and purpose, which proved difficult for Spain to break through.
Germany thought they had snatched the win in the closing stages after Elisa Senss’ effort took a huge deflection and looked set to float over Cata Coll’s head. But, the Spanish shot stopper adjusted well to claw the ball away from goal.
In turn, the first goalless draw of the tournament meant extra time was needed for the 2023 World Cup winners to finally find the breakthrough.
Aitana Bonmati caught Berger off guard with her near-post, close-range finish on 113 minutes to send the Spain bench into a frenzy.
City’s latest summer signing, Sydney Lohmann, also featured for Germany when she replaced Sophia Kleinherne on 97 minutes.
The midfielder proved to be a bright spark as her nation pushed for a dramatic, late equaliser, but the eight-time European Championship winners couldn’t quite get past their tireless Spanish opponents.
Spain will face England in the showpiece occasion at 17:00 (UK) on Sunday 27 July, with coverage available on mancity.com and the Official Man City App.
