Concerns about Manuel Neuer have kept FC Bayern busy over the past few days, but now the all-clear has been given in time for the Bundesliga match against SC Freiburg. Until Friday lunchtime it was completely unclear whether the 39-year-old would actually be able to play in goal, but the captain of the German record champions turned up punctually at 1.54pm for the secret final training session – a clear sign that his illness has been overcome.

According to BILD, Neuer had been plagued by a stomach bug and a persistent cold since Tuesday and there was growing uncertainty as to whether he would be fit in time for the home game against Freiburg.

Kompany himself was still cautious on Friday morning. „We’ll have to see about Manu. He had a bit of a cold and therefore didn’t train. But hopefully he’ll be back as normal today,“ said the Bayern coach. Hoping helped: Neuer was back on the pitch just a few hours later, along with the other goalkeepers – a clear sign that he has recovered from his infection and will be ready for the Freiburg game.

While the situation with Neuer is surprisingly positive, Kompany will have to change his plans elsewhere. Serge Gnabry will definitely miss the game on Saturday. The attacker returned from the German national team with an injury. „Serge will probably not be involved. He came back from the German national team and still felt something. The medical department will have to communicate what exactly,“ explained Kompany.

There is good news for Joshua Kimmich, however. The DFB captain had recently been struggling with a painful capsule injury and even appeared against Slovakia wearing tape and suffering from significant discomfort. Kompany was nevertheless confident: „Jo is normally 100 per cent.“

Kimmich was also on the pitch for the final training session in the afternoon.
