At Euro 2024 he did not start but featured in every game and was central to Spain’s triumph, including a goal in the final against England. Two years on, he heads to the World Cup in prolific form.
He struck again against Peru in Puebla in Spain’s final warm-up, making it six consecutive internationals with a goal. Marca reports he is only the fourth Spain player to score in six straight, after Pirri, Hierro and David Villa, and that only Villa did so without missing a match during his run.
Since late 2024 he has 13 goals and six assists in his last 13 Spain appearances. He has usually started, particularly since September 2025, when Álvaro Morata was last called to the senior side. Oyarzabal has steadily grown into the role.
His numbers in World Cup qualifying were outstanding, with Spain winning five of six and drawing the last, aided by his six goals and four assists. He has played two friendlies this year, against Serbia in late March and Peru on Monday, scoring in both, including a brace versus Serbia.
After the Peru match he said he was happy to help the team in this way, hoped to make it seven in a row, and stressed the collective over individuals. He added that if he does not play he will try to help in other ways, and that prioritising the group and trusting team-mates has been key.
He has enjoyed a strong season with Real Sociedad, 18 goals and four assists, capped by the Copa del Rey. With Spain his level rises alongside Pedri, Rodrigo, Fabián Ruiz and Ferran Torres. Luis de la Fuente trusts him and he appears likely to start against Cabo Verde.
