Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice against Austria in the last 32 of the 2026 World Cup, taking his Spain tally to 29. The Real Sociedad forward moved past Fernando Morientes and drew level with Fernando Hierro, putting the all-time top five within sight.
According to Superdeporte, Spain travelled to the United States, Canada and Mexico among the favourites, yet their group stage did not show their best. Luis de la Fuente's side now look to the knockouts to find full flow as they chase a second star.
Austria were expected to make it awkward despite Spain's edge on paper. Oyarzabal calmed nerves with the opener from a Cucurella cutback, then added his second after the interval.
He now has four goals at this World Cup, leading Spain's scoring at the tournament.
Spain's all-time list is headed by David Villa on 59, then Raúl with 44, Fernando Torres 38 and Álvaro Morata 37, with David Silva fifth on 35. With Silva in fifth, it looks plausible Oyarzabal could overtake him during his career.
