Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella is facing a long spell on the sidelines after suffering an injury against Cagliari on Saturday.

Nicolo Rovella’s ‘Cursed’ Season

It has been a miserable campaign for th 24-year-old, beginning with a groin injury that forced him to stop in September. The Genoa youth product initially opted for alternative treatment, but after failing to find noticeable improvement, he underwent surgery in November.

Rovella has recently returned to action, and has been working on regaining his best form while targeting the Coppa Italia semi-final against Atalanta. Maurizio Sarri handed the deep-lying playmaker a starting role on Saturday, but his Sardinian trip ended with the worst possible outcome.

Rovella Suffered an Injury During Cagliari vs Lazio

Following a challenge from Cagliari defender Ze Pedro, the Lazio midfielder fell awkwardly on the pitch, and he immediately complained of pain in his shoulder. Following a brief treatment, he tried to shake it off and resume action, but the agony persisted, forcing him to leave his place on the field to Danilo Cataldi.

Maurizio Sarri Confirms Rovella Fractured His Collarbone

After the contest, Maurizio Sarri confirmed that Rovella has fractured his collarbone while lamenting what has been a ‘cursed’ campaign for Lazio.

I can’t really blame the lads, because this has been a cursed season. We were already without six players, and now Rovella has a fractured collarbone, so we’re down to seven.

Rovella Out for Six Weeks?

According to Il Corriere dello Sport (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), this injury could keep Rovella on the treatment table for around 45 days. Therefore, he will most likely return in April. In the meantime, Sarri will continue to rely on Cataldi in the Regista role, while hoping to avoid additional injury woes.
