Nottingham Forest left Selhurst Park with a share of the spoils after Callum Hudson-Odoi’s second-half goal cancelled out Ismaila Sarr’s opener in a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.

The home side had the better of a tight first half and took the lead on 37 minutes. Daniel Muñoz found space on the right and picked out Sarr, who swept a precise finish beyond Matz Sels.

Palace nearly doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Marc Guehi’s header clipped the post from an Adam Wharton set-piece.

Forest were far from their fluent best, but they made their only real chance count. On 57 minutes, Dan Ndoye slipped Hudson-Odoi into space and the winger burst past his man before drilling low inside Dean Henderson’s near post.

The visitors even threatened to steal victory late on, with Igor Jesus hitting the upright and Omari Hutchinson lifting over deep into stoppage time. In the end, both sides were left to settle for a point.

Sunday’s match carried an extra edge off the pitch. Palace were denied a Europa League place this summer after breaching UEFA’s multi-club ownership rules, with Forest stepping in to take their spot. Reports suggest it was Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis who alerted UEFA to the offence, a twist that soured relations between the two clubs and sparked chants directed at the Greek businessman and European football’s governing body throughout the afternoon.

For Nuno Espírito Santo, the draw makes it four points from the opening two games of the season and provides a welcome lift after a turbulent week in which questions have been raised over his future.
