Palmeiras have opened 2026 with back-to-back clean sheets, repeating a start last achieved two years ago and underlining Abel Ferreira’s focus on a secure back line.

According to Nosso Palestra, defensive consistency has been a hallmark of Abel Ferreira’s tenure. In 2022 they began with 2-0 against Norizontino and 3-0 against Ponte Preta. In 2023 the first three games finished São Bento 0-0, Botafogo-SP 0-1 and São Paulo 0-0, all with Weverton in goal.

The unit has looked cohesive in the early fixtures, a regularity that stands out given the transition in goal.

Signed to be a leading figure, Carlos Miguel has not looked fazed. Across 14 matches for the club he has nine clean sheets, underlining a swift adaptation and the staff’s confidence.

The strong defensive spell coincides with a significant change. Palmeiras confirmed on Wednesday 14 the departure of Weverton, one of the club’s most successful recent players, who has joined Grêmio to continue his career.
