Tense scenes followed Spain’s World Cup triumph at MetLife Stadium. Leandro Paredes hit out at Eric Garcia, then Gavi, prompting intervention from players and staff.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Boca Juniors player started on the bench against expectations, came on at half-time, was booked and made several challenges that could have led to a second yellow, yet he finished the match.
Moments after referee Slavko Vincic blew for full time, Paredes first struck Eric Garcia. He and Almada then sent Gavi to the turf as the Spain midfielder moved in to protect his team-mate, and Paredes continued while Gavi tried to get up. An assistant referee witnessed the incident.
Spain’s players quickly stepped away from the flashpoint and turned to celebrate the title. The victory delivered the country’s second world crown.
It remains to be seen whether Paredes will face any disciplinary action.
