Dani Parejo appears to be playing his final matches for Villarreal, with his contract expiring and a renewal looking difficult, particularly after Marcelino’s departure. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the 37-year-old’s situation points towards an end to his six-season spell.

Since an abrupt exit from Valencia, Parejo has earned a place among the club’s finest through consistency and silverware. He has made more than 260 appearances, lifted the Europa League in his first year and helped drive a Champions League run to the semi-finals that ousted Juventus and Bayern.

Reporters describe him as a quiet leader and coach on the pitch, the metronome who measures tempo with his head as much as his feet. Early doubts over his move to La Cerámica soon faded as he delivered in the league and in Europe, conducting Unai Emery’s side and later serving as an important piece for Marcelino.

Some voices would not extend his deal, citing advanced age and a questionable fit for Íñigo Pérez’s style after reduced minutes this season and Marcelino’s preference for high-intensity midfielders.

Others argue Parejo still has a season in him, pointing to his professionalism, durability and dressing-room influence, as well as his ability to steady frantic matches and keep Villarreal’s play flowing.
