Adrien Rabiot (29) took to social media to denounce the abuse he received from Paris Saint-Germain fans upon his return to the Parc des Princes on Sunday. However, speaking to RMC Sport show Rothen s’enflamme, former Olympique de Marseille, Juventus, and Manchester United defender Patrice Evra suggested that he would perhaps have resorted to physicaly violence.
A hostile reception was expected for the former PSG midfielder, who now plies his trade for fierce rivals Marseille. The France international captained OM as they lost 3-1. Off the pitch and in the stands, there were offensive chants and banners directed at Rabiot and his mother, Véronique. One of them read: “Loyalty for men, betrayal for whores – like mother, like son.” Six years after his departure from formative club PSG, it was a rude return for the Frenchman, who was also booed and jeered every time he touched the ball.
Rabiot took to social media to denounce the banners and chants that he was subjected to. “Insulting a mother and a dead father – you pay for everything someday. You will not go to heaven, trust me,” he said on social media. The France international has received an outpouring of support from teammates, including Kylian Mbappé, as well as the Mayor of Marseille and the president of the FFF, Philippe Diallo.
However, Evra has now said that he would have handled things a little differently to Rabiot, who only reacted to the abuse post-match. “If I was Rabiot, I would have gone to the bottom of the stand. I would have stayed there and looked at them. The first one (PSG fan) that comes down, I lay into him. After that, maybe you’ll get lynched but you’ll have made an impression,” he began.
He then referenced a moment when, whilst at OM, he kicked a Marseille fan back in November 2017. It was an incident that ultimately saw his contract with Les Phocéens terminated by mutual consent. “You don’t touch mothers. If (the supporters) are right or not, you don’t go after a mother. I gave a supporter a high-kick because, for me, it isn’t a real supporter when you want to attack a family,” he added.
