Patrick Dorgu: Key injury update emerges on Man United star

A major update on Patrick Dorgu’s recovery has emerged from Manchester United’s training ground today, according to a well-placed source.

A Cruel Twist of Fate

Dorgu, 21, has been ruled out since late January after suffering a serious hamstring injury in the pulsating 3-2 win over Arsenal at the Emirates. The Denmark international, who was deployed on the left wing by interim coach Michael Carrick, scored a Goal of the Season contender to put United 2-1 up, before Matheus Cunha’s long-range strike sealed all three points after the Gunners had equalised.

But it was his all-round performance that really caught the eye, with the Copenhagen native offering relentless work rate off the ball and surprising confidence on it. This built upon another outstanding performance in the same position the previous week in the 2-0 triumph over Manchester City in Carrick’s first game in charge.

Earlier in the season, Ruben Amorim had publicly criticised Dorgu’s abilities in possession after United laboured to a dismal 1-0 defeat to 10-man Everton at Old Trafford. While there is a sense the Portuguese coach was deflecting from his own mistakes, it was a critique with merit – as the player himself acknowledged.

For large stretches of Dorgu’s first year in Manchester, having been signed in January 2025 from Serie A minnows Lecce for £30 million, he has struggled with the technical side of English football. Many imports from Europe simply cannot cope with the Premier League’s physicality, but the 6’1″ juggernaut has had zero issues adapting to these demands.

Rather, in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system as a wing-back, where he was tasked with providing attacking threat and guile in the final third, Dorgu has often been found wanting, despite possessing the speed, strength and size to thrive.

However, against two of United’s fiercest rivals, the Dane offered a dramatic improvement in this regard under Carrick’s tutelage – which made the timing of his injury desperately unlucky, as he was beginning to show the exact type of performance that led the club to target him in the first place.

There is a strong argument that the nature of both games – against ‘better’ opposition who would look to dominate with the ball and afford the Red Devils space to counterattack – lent itself perfectly to a ‘defensive’ winger in the mould of Dorgu. But given the alternative in the squad is Cunha, a natural forward who does his best work in the opposition half, the pair provide a potent combination for Carrick to deploy, depending on the tactical approach the caretaker coach opts for.

Furthermore, Dorgu’s ability to play as a left-back, with the athleticism to bomb forward and provide a constant overlap on the outside, offers a complement to Cunha, who prefers to cut inside and drive at the heart of defences. By contrast, the ageing Luke Shaw is simply no longer capable of meeting this demand.

Back training on grass

A ten-week absence was the initial prognosis for Dorgu’s recovery, given the severity of the hamstring tear he sustained at the Emirates. This gave a rough estimate of early April for a return to action.

According to an inside source at Carrington, the 21-year-old appears on track for this date, having returned to individual training on grass this week, offering hope of being available for selection at the end of the international break.

The source states: “Patrick Dorgu has made a positive step in his recovery and has started doing light-intensity grass training for the first time. The 21-year-old has been working tirelessly in recent weeks during strength and conditioning work at the gym and has now finally started doing outdoor work.

“Dorgu is aiming for a return before the end of the season. Coaches at Carrington are delighted with his progress and his hard work during his recovery process so far.”

Final Thoughts

Dorgu’s reintroduction for the business end of the campaign will serve as a major boost for United’s push to secure Champions League qualification. Carrick’s men are currently third in the table, seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea, with fifth almost certain to be sufficient for entry into Europe’s elite competition next season.

The Red Devils are next in action against bitter rivals Leeds United on April 13, as the next round of fixtures after the break are the FA Cup quarter-finals, a competition the Mancunian club exited at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion in January.

This extended gap gives the dynamic Dane even more time to successfully complete his rehabilitation and get up to speed for the final seven games of a campaign in which he looks to finally have become comfortable in a red shirt.
