AS Monaco manager Sebastien Pocognoli has announced the imminent return to competitive action of former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

Pogba on brink of return

Pogba has gone more than two years without playing competitive football, with the last few seasons proving particularly challenging.

After leaving United for a second time and rejoining Juventus, he was handed a four-year ban for testing positive for a prohibited substance.

The ban was later reduced on appeal, but Juventus still chose to release him. He remained without a club for several months and was linked with a number of sides, including a possible return to United.

In the end, Monaco opted to take a chance on him and secured his signature.

Pogba has spent the past three months on a tailored programme to regain full match fitness and he now looks set to finally make his return.

Monaco boss gives Pogba update

Speaking after Monaco’s 5-3 win over FC Nantes on Wednesday, head coach Pocognoli revealed that the Carrington academy graduate could make his debut this weekend during their clash against Paris FC.

Pocognoli remarked [as quoted by Manchester Evening News], “It is possible that he will be in the squad, yes.”

“Paul still has a training session on Thursday and if he is feeling good, we could see him again and he would be within the process that we fixed.”

The coach added, “It would not be illogical to see him.”

Pocognoli, who started the campaign with Belgian side Union SG, has gone unbeaten in his first three Ligue 1 matches.

Monaco are currently second in Ligue 1, just a point below leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
