After years in the cold, Manchester United punched their way back into Champions League football last season, finishing third in the table.

Yet such an end to the campaign would not have been possible without a brave mid-season decision that changed everything.

Amorim out, Carrick in

Conceding that there was no improvement under Ruben Amorim, Ineos pulled the plug and went the caretaker route, bringing Michael Carrick in to steady the ship, and it proved to be a masterstroke.

United underwent an instant revival, hungry to deliver and doing exactly that. Across 17 games, they picked up 12 wins, three draws, and two defeats, results that played a key role in securing third place.

The last few months have certainly given United fans genuine belief that a return to the top is possible under their new permanent head coach.

But as impressive as that Carrick side was, imagine how much more dangerous they could be if INEOS back him with the players he feels are right for his system.

With proper support behind him, there is every reason to believe Carrick can have United challenging for the Premier League sooner rather than later.

Even Paul Pogba believes that will be the case. In a sneak peek of his yet-to-be-released interview with talkSPORT, the former United midfielder was asked whether the club can win the league under Carrick. He did not hesitate:

“Yes! I think in the next years, they will be champions.

“If Arsenal can be champions, Man United will definitely be champions. No disrespect.”

United certainly find themselves in an intriguing position, with a genuine opportunity to return to the summit.

The remarkable turnaround in the second half of the season had many wondering: had Carrick taken charge earlier, could United have given Arsenal a real run for their money?

Carrick needs to be backed

Next season, the former midfielder has the chance to prove his mettle as a top-level manager.

However, just how far he can take this team remains entirely dependent on the backing he receives. United must be ready to splash the cash and assemble a squad he can go to war with.

If the rumour mill is to be believed and he wants Mateus Fernandes, Lewis Hall, and Alex Scott, he must be given exactly that.

Carrick plus proper transfers and United could be winning the league very soon.
