Corinthians host Peñarol in the 2026 Libertadores first phase at Neo Química Arena on 30 April at 21:30, and the Uruguayan club’s president has advised supporters not to travel to São Paulo for the match.
"I recommended to every family who wrote to me that they should not travel. If Peñarol supporters can avoid going to Brazil, better. The Libertadores is not a tourist trip. We will release a letter in the coming hours about the penalties that exist in Brazil and the complexity of the legislation on some issues, so that people know it is not a destination for tourism when you are playing the Copa Libertadores. São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are usually dangerous," said Ignacio Ruglio, speaking to Punto Penal.
Peñarol’s recent following has been far from peaceful. In late 2024 in Rio de Janeiro, hours before the Botafogo semi-final, fans looted shops and stalls and clashed with pedestrians, beachgoers and police. Around 300 Uruguayans were detained by the Military Police.
There was also trouble in 2017, when Palmeiras and Peñarol supporters fought during a match at the Campeón del Siglo. It followed a bomb exploding in the away sector, which led to confrontations and objects being thrown before local police intervened.
Before hosting Peñarol, Corinthians begin their campaign on nine April away to Platense at the Coliseo de Victoria at 21:00. They then face Independiente Santa Fe in Itaquera on 15 April at 21:30.
