Pep Guardiola’s iconic coaching career is now 1,000 games old.

The Catalan hit four figures in Sunday’s crushing 3-0 Premier League win over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.

Since taking charge of Barcelona B in 2007, Guardiola has been on a journey that has not only seen him win everything possible in club football but also leave a much wider impact on the game as a whole.

His non-negotiable demand for beautiful, attacking football is matched by a hunger to succeed in every game his teams play.

Having left an indelible mark at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now City, Guardiola has cemented his status as the best manager in the world in recent years and one of the greatest ever.

Here we’ll take a look at the numbers behind that success…

40

That’s how many trophies Guardiola has.

It all started with the Tercera Division with Barcelona B in his very first campaign – the trophy Guardiola describes as his ‘most important’.

He’s since won 12 league titles in 16 complete seasons, comprising of three out of four La Ligas, all three Bundesligas he competed in and six of nine Premier Leagues.

As for the English top-flight, only Sir Alex Ferguson has ever won in it more than him in its history.

He’s lifted the Champions League on three occasions, twice with Barcelona and once with City.

10 domestic cups have also come in those 16 seasons at the top level, including six in England.

He’s won the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup with all three clubs he’s managed as well as the annual curtain raisers in Spain, Germany and England.

Comparing his trophy haul with many of the other greats of management, Guardiola often comes out favourably.

Carlo Ancelotti has won 31 trophies in his distinguished career, with Jose Mourinho (26), Arsene Wenger (21) and Jurgen Klopp (13) amongst the other famous names a long way back from matching Pep.

In truth, only Alex Ferguson – with 49 trophies across his 39-year coaching career – can beat our boss.

Going back further to some of the greatest names in British football further highlights Pep’s place in history.

Jock Stein (26 trophies), Bob Paisley (20), Brian Clough (16), Matt Busby (13), Herbert Chapman (11) and Bill Shankly (10) are all true legends of the sport, but they cannot match Guardiola’s medal collection.

716

Pep has won 716 of his 1,000 matches, fairly obviously placing his win percentage at a whopping 71.6%.

Across a 38-game league season, that averages out at 27 matches won in every single campaign.

The absence of some historical match-by-match data makes direct, detailed comparison with other managers after 1,000 games impossible.

However, we can take a look at Guardiola’s 71.6% win rate to the current stats of some of his fellow Hall of Famers and as you’d imagine, the numbers show our manager's class.

For instance, Ferguson’s win rate over his 2,155 games in management was 58.1% while Mourinho has been victorious 61.6% of the time and Ancelotti in 59.8% of games.

Other prominent names in European football in the 21st century include Antonio Conte and Luis Enrique, who have won 58.2% and 61.3% respectively.

2,445

That’s how many goals Guardiola’s teams have scored in his 1,000 games so far.

That’s an average of almost 2.5 goals per game, with 1,332 coming in his 550 games as City boss.

Having conceded 813 times in his whole career, Pep’s overall goal difference is a whopping +1,632.

Jeremy Doku’s strike against Liverpool was in fact the 850th Premier League goal City have scored since Pep arrived in 2016, with only 301 going in our goal.

He’s won 9-0 twice in his career, with Barcelona against L’Hospitalet in 2011 and for City against Burton Albion in 2019.

There have been five 8-0 victories and seven 7-0 wins in his career too.

Key City records

Pep’s City became the only side ever to earn 100 points in the Premier League in 2017/18.

We backed that up in 2018/19 by becoming the only side ever to win the English domestic treble, consisting of the top-flight title, FA Cup and League Cup.

The Catalan became the first manager to win the European Treble (top-flight title, main domestic cup and European Cup) with two different clubs in 2022/23.

2023/24 saw us set another record by becoming the first ever team to win the English top-flight in four consecutive seasons.
