Sunderland slipped to a narrow pre-season defeat to Premier League rivals Leeds United in New Jersey, despite long spells of control.

According to Sunderland Echo, this was the second friendly of their US tour on Friday.

An early Black Cats error let Lukas Nmecha score from range. Sunderland dominated possession for stretches but could not find a finish.

There were still positives, with a number of their World Cup players featuring for the first time this summer.

Melker Ellborg was caught high and beaten by Nmecha’s early strike, then later saved well from Dan James. His distribution faltered at times as Leeds sat off. He was rated five.

Nordi Mukiele attacked with purpose down the right, delivering a couple of useful crosses, and defended solidly. He looked in good order for the new season and was rated seven.

Dan Ballard navigated one awkward moment with neat footwork and otherwise defended without fuss. He logged 45 minutes and was rated six.

Luke O'Nien tried to open play with ambitious passes from deep, with one or two not quite landing. He defended well and was rated six.
