Plata has fallen out of favour with Leonardo Jardim and Flamengo’s new staff, with his conduct drawing internal criticism. According to Globo.com, the club are weighing a sale in the second window after the World Cup.
Signed from Al-Sadd in August 2024 in a deal worth R$ 52 million, he initially prospered under Filipe Luís. He played 76 times, scoring eight with 10 assists, and was even used ahead of Pedro centrally.
His social life was questioned, and Bap heard complaints about his behaviour in a staff meeting.
Two red cards last year, against Racing in the Libertadores and São Paulo in the league, brought club fines. Under Jardim the tone shifted, with the staff unhappy with training levels and commitment after the 1-1 draw with Corinthians.
Since Jardim arrived he has made two substitute cameos, against Fluminense and Botafogo. Flamengo still aim to speed up his adaptation, yet view him as negotiable given the mismatch with the new staff’s profile.
A strong World Cup could improve his value. His Ecuador standing is intact, with a call-up for March friendlies against Morocco and the Netherlands, and at 25 he is considered a certainty for Sebastián Beccacece’s squad.
If sold for more than his purchase price, 30% of any profit goes to Al-Sadd under a 2024 clause. His camp said they were surprised by Jardim’s remarks, citing a physical issue, though scans showed no injury and his omission was an internal call. He was not listed as injured.
