Manchester United halted their four-game losing Premier League away run against Arsenal with an incredible 3-2 victory.

Arsenal set an unprecedented feat in Tuesday’s 3-1 away win over Inter Milan, winning a seventh consecutive UEFA Champions League game for the first time in club history.

In doing so, they extended their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 13 games, setting themselves up perfectly for defending their home fortress against a resurgent United side.

Fresh off a 2-0 victory over Manchester City on Michael Carrick’s touchline debut, Man Utd headed to North London, looking to take another huge scalp and inflict Arsenal’s first home defeat since May.

However, the hosts took the lead on the stroke of the half-hour mark through Lisandro Martinez’s unfortunate own goal, and it looked like they could be on the verge of a fifth successive home league win over the Red Devils.

Despite struggling to create many chances before falling behind, Carrick’s side cut the Gunners’ celebrations short in the 37th minute, courtesy of Martin Zubimendi’s epic blunder.

The Spanish midfielder misplaced a simple back pass, releasing Bryan Mbeumo one-on-one with David Raya. The in-form forward demonstrated his class with a composed finish to draw his team level.

Man Utd couldn’t have hoped for a better start to the second half as Patrick Dorgu slotted home a stunning half-volley from outside the box to turn the game on its head.

Despite getting back to level terms in the 84th minute through Mikel Merino’s tap-in, the Gunners suffered their first home defeat of the season, as Matheus Cunha scored a phenomenal long-range strike three minutes later.

Arsenal (4-3-3)

David Raya – There was nothing he could do to stop Mbeumo, while he did his best to thwart Dorgu’s shot, though he fell agonisingly short.

Jurrien Timber – Fared reasonably well defensively against Dorgu, but showed no attacking ambition.

William Saliba – Made a crucial tackle to deny Bruno Fernandes a clear-cut chance shortly after Arsenal took the lead.

Gabriel Magalhaes – Calm and collected in possession, the Brazilian excelled in aerial duels but struggled to keep up with Mbeumo’s pace.

Piero Hincapie (5/10) – Played out of position, the former Bayer Leverkusen defender showed clear attacking limitations. Neutralised Amad Diallo’s attacking threat.

Declan Rice – Read the game perfectly on a number of occasions, leading to several key interceptions. His set-piece delivery often caused havoc inside United’s box.

Martin Zubimendi (4/10) – Never put his foot wrong on either side of that unfathomable error. Unfortunately, that moment of madness defined his performance this evening.

Martin Odegaard (5/10) – Arteta must have expected more creativity from his captain, but nothing went the Norwegian’s way this afternoon. One of his weakest games this term.

Bukayo Saka – Disappeared from the match after a bright start. His crosses were often erratic, while his decision-making let him down in the final third.

Leandro Trossard (5/10) – After a near-anonymous first-half display, the diminutive winger grew into the context, yet

Gabriel Jesus (3/10) – Nowhere near his match-winning performance against Inter, the ex-Man City star had no impact today, frequently losing possession far too easily.

Substitutions

Ben White

Viktor Gyokeres (4/10)

Mikel Merino (7/10) – Made Man Utd feel his talismanic presence in the box, but his equaliser was in vain.

Eberechi Eze (4/10)

Noni Madueke (3/10)

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

Senne Lammens – Martinez’s sloppy reaction left him chanceless, but he stopped everything else that came his way.

Diogo Dalot – Another disappointing night for the Portuguese wing-back from the offensive point of view. However, his way of dealing with Saka was impressive.

Harry Maguire – Made light work of Jesus in the opening 60 minutes and continued in the same vein against Gyokeres. Equally composed on the ball.

Lisandro Martinez – Unfazed by that 29th-minute mistake, the Argentine centre-back was superb both defensively and in possession, even completing several forward runs.

Luke Shaw – Though his attacking output left a lot to be desired, the experienced left-back had Trossard in his back pocket.

Casemiro – Far less involved than against Man City a week ago, the veteran midfielder was part of the reason why United faltered in the midfield battle.

Kobbie Mainoo – Like Casemiro, he paid much more attention to his defensive duties, which limited his influence in possession and blunted his usual ability to dictate the tempo in the middle of the park.

Patrick Dorgu – Although his thunderous strike took a slight deflection, it takes nothing away from his stunning goal that put Arsenal on the back foot.

Bruno Fernandes – Despite lacking his trademark impact, the Red Devils captain looked confident on the ball, often choosing the right pass.

Amad Diallo – Completely cut off from the rest of the team, the Ivorian forward had an atypically quiet game by his standards.

Bryan Mbeumo (7/10) – With Man Utd predominantly oriented on defensive transitions, he was often isolated up front yet converted the only chance he had to restore parity.

Substitutions

Matheus Cunha – What a goal! All he needed was 20 minutes on the pitch to show why United paid £62.5m for his services.
