UEFA Champions League, Matchday 6, 10/12/25

PSG have recorded their first draw of the Champions League campaign at San Mamés. The Champions League winners struggled in the first half and were too wasteful in the second. Les Parisiens miss the opportunity to strengthen their spot in the Top 8.

The Match

Luis Enrique had several absences to deal with as Lucas Chevalier, Achraf Hakimi and Ousmane Dembélé didn’t make the trip to Bilbao. Fortunately for the Spaniard, Désiré Doué was back with the Champions League winners, although only fit enough for a spot on the bench.

Spurned on by a bouncing San Mamés, Athletic showed how much they needed a result to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the latter stages of the Champions League. Their intense press hurt Luis Enrique’s players, who were guilty of some lax passing in the opening exchanges. Their midfielder trio was struggling and the wide men were ineffective.

PSG’s first shot on target occurred in the dying minutes of the first half as Unai Simon came up clutch to deny Senny Mayulu, who should have added more venom to his strike from Warren Zaïre-Emery’s cross. The make-shift striker saw another attempt parried away by the in-form Spain international goalkeeper.

It proved to be a game of two halves as PSG finally matched Athletic’s intensity and urgency. But the visitors were still wasteful in the final third. Kvaratskhelia curled a trademark curler just wide and Barcola rattled Simon’s crossbar following a brilliant team move, although the France international could have squared it to his unmarked Georgian teammate.

In the end, none of the teams really deserved to win and it ended all square and goalless at San Mamés. PSG remain third in the Champions League standings and well on their way to avoid the play-offs. Athletic remain in the elimination zone in 28th place.

PSG player ratings

Matvey Safonov  – 6

Put under pressure by Athletic’s press, and by some of his teammates’ risky passing, he dealt admirably with the occasion. Since Lucas Chevalier’s injury, he has not put a foot wrong.

Nuno Mendes  – 4

Willian Pacho  – 5

Marquinhos  – 5

The Brazilian centre-back held his ground and, unlike his teammates, won most of his duels tonight. After being stamped on by Oihan Sancet, he pulled off at half-time. Replaced by Illia Zabarnyi, who was teammates with Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov for the first time.

Warren Zaïre-Emery – 6

Fabian Ruiz – 5

Vitinha – 5

João Neves – 4

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – 6

Senny Mayulu – 4

Bradley Barcola – 3

The France international’s barren run in the Champions League continues. Be it on the right or the left wing, the winger is making too little differences. His decision-making lets him down too, as shown by his decision not to square the ball to the unmarked Kvaratskhelia for what would have been an easy tap-in. Replaced by Gonçalo Ramos.
