Matchday 2 Ligue 1 McDonald’s, 23/08/2025In the midst of a chaotic week of drama for Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille, Les Olympiens get their first win of the 2025-2026 season in style with a 5-2 win over newly promoted Paris FC. Mason Greenwood opened the scoring with a a penalty, before a brace from Aubameyang, a strike from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and an injury time effort from Robinio Vaz downed a spirited Paris FC side.it was finally time to get back to the pitch. The reality was for Les Olympiens that they had only lost the first game of the season – and by a narrow margin. Yet off field events would dominate the build-up to the match, almost acting as a distraction in the last week in the Provence region.
It was a timid start from De Zerbi’s men, with slow build-up and tentative attempts to get up the pitch. It was in fact who had the first chance of the affair, latching onto a cross from Moses Simon which he nodded just wide of the left post. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then hit the post with a deft chip over Nkambadio that was only inches from rebounding into the back of the net. The Gabon international was adjudged to have been fouled in the box, and after VAR review saw the referee give the penalty after seeing Otavio’s right boot drag back Aubameyang in the box. Mason Greenwood stepped up to convert for his first goal of the season (17′).
One would become two just minutes later when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang flicked home from a corner in acrobatic style to score his first goal since his return to the Vélodrome (24′). Relief around the Vélodrome, but it wouldn’t last long when Illan Kebbal popped up in the Marseille box with a superb curled effort into the top left corner – scoring PFC’s first goal in Ligue 1 for 46 years. Following the break Les Parisiens would find another opportunity thanks to yet another mistake in OM’s backline which saw Kebbal feed Moses Simon in the box, and the Nigerian rounded Rulli and slid a finish to put PFC on level terms to increase the nervosity of the Vélodrome going into the final stages of the game.
But that man again, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was at his clinical best when he picked up on Lohann Doucet’s mistake after being pressed by Greenwood and finished with a first-time strike to put OM back ahead. A powerful long-range effort from Pierre Emile Højbjerg put some gloss on the scoreline, and relative comfort for Marseille fans going into the final minutes. The cherry on the cake came for OM, as Robinio Vaz grabbed his first goal for the club with a near-post finish and bring a smile back to the Marseille squad who duelly celebrated.
OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE PLAYER RATINGS
Geronimo Rulli – 4
Michael Amir Murillo – 5
CJ Egan-Riley – 5
Once again mirroring his match against Stade Rennais, the Englishman was strong in possession and in his last-minute interventions – but the same unforgivable lack of communication that saw Blas score against Les Olympiens at Rennes occurred once again for Simon’s equaliser, as the Nigerian was played once again onside with the high line.
Leonardo Balerdi – 4
Ulisses Garcia – 5
Pierre-Emile Højbjerg – 6
Angel Gomes – 5
Amine Gouiri – 6
An interesting experiment by De Zerbi to put the Algerian international behind Aubameyang in place of Adrien Radbiot’s absence. It worked in ways, but frustrated in a lack of clinical edge and a final pass which often went missing. For the final stages he was positioned closer to Aubameyang …
Timothy Weah – 5
Mason Greenwood – 5
Far from his worst performance in an OM shirt, he was active on the ball and had the composure to slot away his first penalty. With the onus less on his performance due to the emergence of Aubameyang, he was less active in the mid-period of the game in the attacking phases but did well to come back and defend when needed. His second penalty was rushed, and he should have really killed the game off when he could.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 7
The Gabon international is rolling back the years and showed his clinical best against Paris FC, even if OM didn’t create a huge amount of chances in either half. He hit the post in the first half with an opening lob over Nkambadio. The first goal was a fine piece of opportune positioning to flick home from the corner, before reading Lohann doucet’s mistake in the second half and finishing well with a first-time finish. That’s what you get with Aubameyang, if he can stay fit for the rest of the season.
PARIS FC PLAYER RATINGS Obed Nkambadio – 5
Noah Sangui – 5
Otavio – 4
Moustapha Mbow – 6
Samir Chergui – 5
Maxime Lopez – 6
Vincent Marchetti – 5
Adama Camara – 5
Moses Simon – 6A solid outing for the Nigerian international, who grabbed his first goal in PFC colours with a finely timed run and finish past Rulli to grab the Parisian side’s equaliser. He was energetic down the right side, but the shine wore off his performance in the latter stages as OM pulled away.
Willem Geubbels – 4
Ilan Kebbal – 7
The Marseille-born winger was the clear outstanding player for the away side, opening his Ligue 1 and Paris FC’s account with a superb curled strike in the first half. He then found the pinpoint pass to feed through Moses Simon for PFC’s equaliser. He’ll be a special talent to watch this season in Ligue 1.GFFN | George Boxall – Reporting from Stade Vélodrome, Marseille
