Ligue 1 McDonald’s, Round 27, 21/03/26

Paris Saint-Germain eased past OGC Nice (0-4) on Saturday night to retake top spot in Ligue 1 at RC Lens’ expense; Nice’s relegation fears, meanwhile, deepen, especially after AJ Auxerre’s 3-0 win earlier in the day.

The Match

It was Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, in a free role, who caused Nice the most issues in the first-half. He was the first player to get in behind what was a closely-packed defence, but from a close angle, he could not beat Yehvann Diouf. The Georgian did beat Diouf on two other occasions, but could not beat Juma Bah, who twice made goal-saving interventions.

PSG’s goal was gifted just before half-time. Désiré Doué struck a shot that was off-target but struck the arm of Morgan Sanson. The penalty was awarded on review and Nuno Mendes sent Diouf the wrong way from the spot. Le Gym had competed, even creating chances of their own, but Youssouf Ndayishimiye twice failed to get on the end of sumptuous Jonathan Clauss deliveries.

There was reason for hope for Nice at half-time, despite them trailing, but it quickly evaporated upon the return from the dressing room as Doué doubled PSG’s advantage. The game slipped further away from Nice, who saw Youssouf Ndayishimiye given his marching orders after catching Lee Kang-in above the ankle.

PSG were cruising; their three starting forwards were withdrawn, but they kept pushing. They were rewarded when Dro netted his first professional goal in a competitive game and then again moments later when Clauss’ attempted clearance rebounded off Warren Zaire-Emery and past Diouf. It is the second consecutive game that Nice have lost 4-0 at home. PSG are back at the top.

OGC Nice player ratings

Yehvann Diouf – 4

Dante – 5

Juma Bah – 6

This could have been a lot uglier had the Manchester City loanee not been so diligent in making the recovering tackles to bail out his side.

Antoine Mendy – 5

Melvin Bard – 5

Youssouf Ndayishimiye – 4

Hicham Boudaoui – 4

Morgan Sanson – 5

Jonathan Clauss – 6

Sofiane Diop – 3

A lot of Nice’s attacks went through him and a lot ended through him too. Despite often finding good positions, he lacked the precision to make PSG, losing the ball much too often.

Elye Wahi – 4

PSG player ratings

Matvey Safonov – 5

Nuno Mendes – 7

In an unfamiliar role much higher up the field, he showed his attacking talent, registering a goal and an assist. Not so restricted by his defensive duties, his pace was a real problem for Clauss, who never really had the Portugal international under control.

Willian Pacho – 5

Illia Zabarnyi – 4

Lucas Hernandez – 5

Warren Zaire-Emery – 6

Senny Mayulu – N/A

Replaced by Lucas Beraldo (5) midway through the first half.

Vitinha – 6

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – 6

It was the Georgian, playing as a libero, who bent Nice’s defence out of shape in the first half, dropping deep and multiplying the runs in behind. He was unlucky not to have two goals to his name before half-time.

Lee Kang-in – 6

Désiré Doué – 7
