UEFA Champions League, Matchday 4, 04/11/25
PSG have succumbed to their first Champions League defeat this season against the unbeaten Bayern Munich. Before his sending off for an ankle-breaker on Achraf Hakimi, Luis Diaz secured Bayern a two-goal lead. João Neves halved the deficit in the second half.
The Match
The Champions League winners took on the German pace-setters with both sides boasting a 100 % record in the competition. Early on, Bayern showed their title credentials with a ball recovery high up the pitch, allowing Serge Gnabry to feed Michael Olise. Lucas Chevalier denied his France teammate, but Luis Diaz was there to collect and fire the ball home four minutes into the game
PSG, who conceded their earliest Champions League goal since Romelu Lukaku’s opener with Manchester United in 2019, struggled to contain Bayern’s suffocating press. Les Parisiens’ midfield trio were uncharacteristically bullied, and their attack looked unsettled.
Ousmane Dembélé struggled to make his mark for what seemed a surprise start. The Ballon d’Or winner eventually found the back of Manuel Neuer’s net, but he was offside. He then limped off the pitch before the half-hour mark to be replaced by Lee Kang-in.
PSG’s problems deepened considerably when Diaz doubled Bayern’s lead, but PSG were very much the makers of their own misfortune as Marquinhos lost possession too easily from the Colombian. Before the former Liverpool man’s second, Bradley Barcola missed a great chance, toeing his effort straight at Neuer.
As half-time beckoned, Diaz needlessly took down Achraf Hakimi with a two-footed tackle that caught the Moroccan’s left ankle. Initially booked, Diaz could not escape a harsher punishment from Maurizio Mariani as replay clearly shows he endangered his opponent’s safety. The injured Hakimi was replaced by Senny Mayulu.
In the second half, 10-man Bayern sustained wave after wave of PSG attacks, but a lack of end product and the brilliance of Dayot Upamecano meant Bayern held on. Luis Enrique turned to his bench and called on Portugal internationals Gonçalo Ramos and João Neves to make the difference.
Vitinha alerted Neuer with a vicious dipping shot from distance, but the German goalkeeper would finally be beaten as Neves brilliantly collects Lee Kang-in’s left-footed cross from the right. PSG continued with their onslaught as Vincent Kompany proceeded to close up shop with the introductions of Kim Min-jae and Leon Goretzka at the expense of Michael Olise and Harry Kane.
Bayern eventually held on to their slender lead, extending their perfect record this season with a sixteenth win on the bounce. PSG fell to defeat in the Champions League, they will host Tottenham Hotspur for Matchday 5.
Lucas Chevalier – 4
Achraf Hakimi – 5
Marquinhos – 3
The Brazilian returned to PSG’s starting line-up in the Champions League following Illia Zabarnyi’s red card against Bayer Leverkusen. The skipper was unlucky not to keep out Luis Diaz’s powerful opener, but he only has himself to blame for the way he has set up the Colombian for his double.
Willian Pacho – 4
Nuno Mendes – 5
Warren Zaïre-Emery – 5
Vitinha – 6
Fabian Ruiz – 4
Bradley Barcola – 3
The France international has clearly hit a rough patch and his lack of ruthlessness starts to show. He has missed several opportunities to score and, in the absences of both Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé, he does not look ready to take up the mantle. That was his 11th consecutive Champions League game without a goal. Hooked after the hour mark.
Ousmane Dembélé – N/A
The Ballon d’Or winner was surprisingly given a start despite numerous reports indicating he would only come off the bench in the second half. In the end, he lost the ball leading to Luis Diaz’s opener. He thought he had restored parity, but he was cleverly played onside by Dayot Upamecano. He threw in the towel before the half-hour mark. Replaced by Lee Kang-in (6), who had a very lively cameo. He notably assisted Neves’ goal.

The Colombian took centre stage with a neat first-half double, punishing PSG’s defense with his killer instincts. The former Liverpool winger could have been the hero, but his evening lived long enough for him to become the villain. In the dying minutes of the first half, Diaz took down Achraf Hakimi with a two-footed ankle-breaker and the referee had no choice but to give him a red card.
Harry Kane – 4
