West Ham relegated as Jarrod Bowen joins elite club of 20+ goal involvements in doomed teams

Fabrizio Ravanelli, Middlesbrough - 1996/97

Middlesbrough's relegation at the end of the 1996/97 season remains one of the Premier League's biggest shocks. The talented Teesiders reached both domestic cup finals that season, having signed Fabrizio Ravanelli from Champions League winners Juventus.

Ravanelli marked his debut with a hat-trick against Liverpool and ended the season with 31 goals in all competitions, including 16 in the Premier League.

However, a dreadful run of one win in 16 games between September and January dragged 'Boro into the relegation battle, before a a three-point deduction for postponing a fixture against Blackburn in December proved decisive.

Ravanelli, who scored 16 goals and created four more in the Premier League, left for Marseille that summer.

Juninho, Middlesbrough - 1996/97

Incredibly, Middlesbrough had two players reach 20 goals and assists in the Premier League during their 1996/97 relegation campaign.

Juninho did his best to drag 'Boro to safety, scoring 12 times and setting up nine goals.

The Brazilian's performances earned him thePremier League Player of the Season award in a relegated team, a feat that has never been achieved since.

Andy Johnson, Crystal Palace - 2004/05

Andy Johnson remains the only player to have scored 20+ Premier League goals for a relegated side.

Johnson netted 21 goals forCrystal Palace and assisted three more, but his return was not enough to save the Eagles. Palace were relegated on a dramatic final day after conceding a late equaliser at Charlton.

Johnson stuck with Palace in the second tier, but joined Everton in 2006 after the South Londoners failed to secure an automatic return to the Premier League.

Charlie Adam, Blackpool - 2010/11

Blackpool were a breath of fresh air under Ian Holloway in 2010/11, sitting in the top half in January before a drastic decline ended in relegation.

Charlie Adam was the pick of the Tangerines' team, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists. His performances earned the Scot a move to Liverpool at the end of the season.

Charlie Austin, Queens Park Rangers - 2014/15

Charlie Austin's rise from non-league to the top division peaked in 2014/15, when the forward fired 18 goals for Queens Park Rangers. Austin ended the season with 23 goal involvements, for aQPR team that finished bottom of the division.

Jarrod Bowen, West Ham - 2025/26

Jarrod Bowen tried and tried to keep West Ham in the Premier League, but the East Londoners will play Championship football next season.

Bowen reached 20 goals and assists in a Premier League season for the fourth time (21), more than every other player combined in West Ham's Premier League history (3).
