Liverpool are in contact over a brilliant playmaker. The Reds’ new creative influence?
Liverpool are readying some major moves in 2025. 2025, of course, was about as slow of a transfer window as you could possibly imagine.
The Reds signed one first-team player for new-boss Arne Slot. Federico Chiesa arrived and even then it was a bargain deal right at the end of the window born out of pure opportunity.
They wanted Martin Zubimendi to join the squad but when that didn’t go through, Richard Hughes was content to end his first transfer window as sporting director without any major additions. Though, he did grab Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia as a ‘future’ signing - the Georgian links up with Liverpool this year.
Things will be different this time around. Liverpool are ready to completely back Slot with a squad of his own and that means reshaping key areas of the squad.
One of those is in attack, where there’s a real feeling that things can improve dramatically. An exciting thought for the league champions, of course.
There are a few ways Liverpool and build a new attack. One of those is with a new playmaker, someone who can add a few more goals and assists from a deeper role and lift a lot of the creative burden from Mo Salah.
And perhaps the Reds have landed on someone. Le Parisien claims Liverpool are one of the clubs to have asked about Rayan Cherki ahead of the summer.
Now, they’re not alone in that. Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have done the same, with Cherki almost certainly to move for around £20m.
Paris Saint-Germain, though, are out of the race. They’re focusing on other targets and won’t add Cherki to their legion of elite French talents.
So when you also add in City’s deep interest in Florian Wirtz, it’s quite easy to see Liverpool leading this race. Tottenham could become a bit of a problem if they win the UEFA Europa League and qualify for the Champions League, but as things stand? The Reds must feel as though Cherki is there’s for the taking.
There’s little question that he’d be a steal this summer - a 22-year-old, two-footed playmaker with eight goals and 10 assists this season? £20m(ish)? No wonder Liverpool are asking about him.
