Police intervened at Marseille’s Saint-Charles station on Saturday morning to prevent a planned ‘fight’ between Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille supporters.
According to La Provence, around 15 Paris supporters had taken an early train bound for Nîmes, where a clash between ultras from both clubs appeared to have been arranged around the National 2 fixture between Nîmes and Toulon. The outlet also reported five Marseille arrests, while the Bouches-du-Rhône police prefecture put the number at three and said the Parisians were told to return to the capital.
As the travelling group passed through Marseille for a connection at about nine am, roughly 30 Marseille supporters were present at the station, apparently seeking an initial confrontation.
Officers on site broke up the gathering before it escalated, using tear gas to clear the area.
The incident comes a week after the Classique at the Parc des Princes, which PSG won 5-0, a match played without OM supporters in the stands.
