Ange Postecoglou has called Tottenham’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton the ‘worst defeat of his reign with the club.

Spurs saw their five-game winning run brought to an abrupt end after losing 3-2 at the Amex Stadium on Sunday. The North Londoners were in complete control of the contest after taking a two-goal lead into half-time.

Brennan Johnson scored for the sixth straight game to open the scoring and continue his red-hot form, before James Maddison doubled the visitor’s advantage before the break.

Spurs, however, collapsed after half-time as Brighton battled back into the game. Yankuba Minteh pulled one back three minutes after the restart, before Georginio Rutter equalised after fine work from the impressive Karou Mitoma.

The Seagulls surged forward with confidence increased and found a winner when Welbeck headed in from Rutter’s cross to complete the comeback.

Defeat leaves Spurs ninth in the table heading into the international break and Postecoglou hit out at the ‘unacceptable’ second half from his team.

Postecoglou ‘absolutely gutted’ after Brighton defeat

“Disappointing. Frustrated and absolutely gutted with that,” Postecoglou said to Sky Sports.

“Worst defeat since I’ve been here. Unacceptable second half. Nowhere near where we should be. We got carried away with how were were going.

“We kind of accepted our fate and it is hard to understand as we’ve not done that while I’ve been here. We paid the price.

“The problem is we are travelling along too smoothly, football and life will trip you up if you get too far ahead of yourself.

“There is no message (to the players). It is a terrible loss for us – as bad as it gets. Only one way to fix it and that’s my responsibility.

“We lost all our duels and if you’re not competitive it is not going to work – we were not competitive.

“They all go international duty the majority of them. They will process it individually and I will process it when everyone gets back.”
