Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou says Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim deserves a lot of credit for the way he has dealt with the challenges he has faced this season.
Tottenham beat Bodo/Glimt 5-1 on aggregate to seal their spot in the final of a European competition for the first time since 2019.
They will face a Manchester United side who sit 15th in the Premier League table, but they are coming into the game off the back of a 7-1 aggregate win over Athletic Bilbao.
Although Tottenham have beaten the Red Devils three times out of three this season, Postecoglou believes that in finals, previous matches become “irrelevant”.
“I am looking forward to the match, Amorim’s had his own challenges this year, but again, I think it’s credit to him,” he said. “He’s got his club to European final, and I am looking forward to matching up with him.
“We’ve had some good games against United this year and last year for sure where we’ve come out on top, but it’s a final of a game of a major tournament.”
He added: “I think the one thing you don’t look at is previous head to head comparisons. They become irrelevant, it is all about who performs on the day.”
The final will be the Postecoglou’s 100th game as Spurs manager and he believes that the supporters will have an important part to play in helping the team lift the trophy.
“I think the supporters played a huge role in our European run,” he said. “The AZ game at home, then Frankfurt home and away, and obviously Bodo home and away; I think they’ve been brilliant.
“During the Bodo game at home people got nervous when we conceded. I thought we were so dominant that night, but a big part of that was just the way we started the game, and it was because of the energy inside the stadium from the moment the boys walked out.
“There’s no doubt the crowd have played a huge part in our in our cup run.
“We only had sort of four or five hundred there the other night, so the rest of them were all here, and they’re all euphoric. This will be their first chance to maybe share with the people that go to games regularly, that experience of the other night at the game on Sunday tomorrow.”
Despite Tottenham fans already getting excited about the Europa League final, the club still have Premier League fixtures against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa before the game in Bilbao.
“It’s important tomorrow we go out there and put in a performance,” he said ahead of the game against Palace. “It’s not easy when I’m going to be making the changes and I think sometimes it’s unfair on the lads, but that’s the situation we’re in.”
Tottenham drew 1-1 with West Ham last weekend and the Spurs boss believes that his side are improving at handling two games a week.
“I thought last week they handled it a lot better,” he said. “We need to do a similar thing, just to be really resilient, make sure we put in a positive performance so that our supporters get the chance to continue the sort of positive feelings around the club at the moment.”
