The Power Rankings has a new leader this week after PSG faltered in Ligue 1, opening the door for someone else to overtake them.
The question is: which team has seized the opportunity?
AC Milan have jumped into the top ten after winning four games on the bounce in all competitions. They pushed Udinese aside with a 3-0 away win last weekend before beating ten-man Lecce by the same score to reach the third round of the Coppa Italia.
Max Allegri’s return to the dugout has seen the Rossoneri improve at both ends of the pitch; they boast one of the best expected goal differences (5.1xGD) in Europe’s top five leagues. But the real test of their credentials comes over the next two weeks when they face both Napoli and Juventus.
The Old Lady shot into seventh place in our rankings last week, but consecutive draws has seen their momentum stall.
An impressive comeback from Thomas Frank’s men against Brighton sees Tottenham Hotspur hold onto 9th place this week.
Spurs followed it up with a comfortable 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers on Wednesday as they eased into the fourth round of the League Cup.
No movement for Arsenal, whose conservative approach to their encounter with Manchester City on Sunday arguably cost them two points.
Mikel Arteta went for a safe and steady midfield selection, starting Eberechi Eze on the bench. The playmaker was came on in the second half to provide the killer ball for Gabriel Martinelli’s late equaliser.
City, who played ultra defensively after going ahead, were there for the taking, particularly at the Emirates Stadium, but the Gunners didn’t play aggressively enough and paid the price for it. If they are to win the Premier League or, even more importantly, rise to the top of our rankings, then they need to be more dynamic in the big games.
USG followed up their first ever Champions League win with a last-minute victory at Genk in the Jupiler League. The hosts had their chances to win the game, and even had a go-ahead goal chalked off, but Rob Schoofs popped up in the 94th minute to fire in from the edge of the box for the visitors.
It may not have been a vintage performance from Union, but they dug out the victory nonetheless. After becoming Belgian champions last season for the first time in 90 years, they are on course to retain the title; they are unbeaten after eight games with a six-point lead over Anderlecht, Club Brugge and STVV.
Porto stay where they are after beating lowly Rio Ave 3-0 away from home last Friday. Pablo Rosario, Samu Aghehowa and Gabri Veiga got the goals during a routine win.
The Dragões remain top of the Primeira Liga table, three points ahead of defending champions Sporting Clube de Portugal, having conceded just one goal in six league outings.
On the same night Ousmane Dembele picked up the Ballon d’Or, Paris Saint-Germain suffered their first defeat of the season, losing to bitter rivals Marseille.
The wide forward’s absence through injury may have been a contributing factor, but it also shone a spotlight on some fragilities in Luis Enrique’s team.
The result means that Ligue 1, for once, is the most competitive of the top leagues in Europe as things stand. PSG, Monaco, Lyon and Strasbourg are inseparable at the top, each sitting on four points, while only three points separate first from seventh.
Liverpool have maintained their 100 per cent start to the new campaign, but continue to make hard of it. They allowed Everton back into the Merseyside Derby before holding on for a 2-1 win and required yet another late goal to beat Championship strugglers Southampton in the League Cup.
Alexander Isak did at least score his first goal for the club in that match, and he will definitely be starting at Crystal Palace this weekend after Hugo Ekitike was sent off following his winner.
The Reds have not been entirely convincing in their performances, but the most important thing is they keep racking up the wins.
Barcelona swatted aside Getafe in front of just 6000 fans at the Estadi Johan Cruyff, where they had to get special dispensation to play after their return to the Camp Nou was delayed.
The final result on Sunday was 3-0, with Ferran Torres grabbing a brace and Dani Olmo getting the third, but the scoreline could have been anything. Barça created five big chances on the night as they ran roughshod over the Madrid outfit.
After failing to impress at the Club World Cup, there was a feeling that Xabi Alonso would need time to implement his system at Real Madrid. The opening two months of the new season have firmly put that notion to bed.
Wins over Espanyol and Levante this past week have seen them stretch their lead at the top of LaLiga to five points, although they do have a game in hand over nearest rivals Barcelona at the time of writing.
Another convincing victory in the Bundesliga sees Bayern Munich shoot all the way into top spot. Vincent Kompany’s side dismantled Hoffenheim to win 4-1 on the road, with Harry Kane grabbing the latest hat-trick of his career.
Bayern sit first in the table with perfect record and a huge +15 goal difference after the opening four games of the campaign.
