Premier League Awards: Forest sink Spurs in six-pointer

Our Premier League Awards celebrate the best and worst of the weekend action, featuring Beto’s brace, Nottingham Forest’s big win at Spurs, and more.

Moment of the Week

There was an almighty six-pointer down at the bottom this weekend as Tottenham Hotspur hosted Nottingham Forest. Two teams who secured European football last season have been dragged into a dogfight and there was plenty at stake in North London.

Struggling Spurs were greeted with a raucous reception as the club sought to build on the momentum of a Champions League win against Atletico Madrid. Spurs started brightly, but were stunned late in the first half when Igor Jesus headed home for Forest.

The nerves suffocated Spurs from there on, with further goals from Morgan Gibbs-White and Taiwo Awoniyi sealing a massive win for the visitors. Spurs sink to 17th and remain in a perilous position.

It would be remiss of us to overlook Sunderland’s snatch of Tyne-Wear derby bragging rights as an honourable mention.

Newcastle’s Black Cat curse continued as Brian Brobbey’s 90th-minute winner saw Sunderland steal the points at St James’ Park. It’s 11 league games unbeaten for Sunderland in the derby, a new record for either side.

Player of the Week

Make no mistake, Everton are in the race for Europe. After several seasons treading water to stay in the division, the Toffees are targeting the top five. David Moyes’s side produced their best performance yet – in certainly the best atmosphere – at Hill Dickinson Stadium to thrash Chelsea 3-0 on Saturday night.

The often maligned Beto was the hero of the hour, with two goals and an assist to stun the visitors. Beto has received plenty of groans from Everton fans during his time with the club, but this was a sweet moment for the 28-year-old. His first goal was fantastic, a delicate dink over Robert Sanchez, after racing onto James Garner’s pass.

He’s not perfect, but Beto’s strengths are his power and ability to stretch defences in behind. Everton must play to them across the run-in.

Goal of the Week

Straight off the training ground from Aston Villa, who snapped their recent run of poor results with a 2-0 win over West Ham.

The opener came via a well-worked set-piece routine, placed perfectly into the far corner by John McGinn.

Save of the Week

Jordan Pickford is fast creating his own personal Save of the Season competition. Another excellent reaction denied Enzo Fernandez against Chelsea, as Pickford claimed his 100th clean sheet for Everton.

Stat of the Week

Manchester United will be sick of the sight of Andoni Iraola. The Spaniard has been a bogey man for the Red Devils during his career and extended his unbeaten run against United on Friday night.

A 2-2 draw between Bournemouth and Manchester United means Iraola has never lost to United in eight previous meetings as player and coach.

A week to forget for…

Liam Rosenior. The knives are already out for the Chelsea coach just two-and-a-half months into his reign. An initial bright start has faded fast with a 3-0 thumping at Everton a fourth consecutive loss in all competitions.

Chelsea have conceded 12 goals in that period, exiting Europe in the process, and falling behind in the top-five race.

Rosenior’s résumé meant he was always up against it to convince at Chelsea and recent results have strengthened the view of sceptics. Manager’s need time to succeed, but – rightly or wrongly – the jury is already out.
