Sunderland’s dramatic Tyne-Wear derby victory at Newcastle has sharpened their push for Europe, and the 10-game Premier League form table shows where they stand.

After Anthony Gordon put the Magpies ahead early, Chemsdine Talbi levelled before Brian Brobbey struck a stoppage-time winner at St James Park. The result completed a league double over Eddie Howe’s side and extended Sunderland’s unbeaten league run against Newcastle to 11 games, the longest by either club in the rivalry.

Across the last 10 league fixtures, Manchester United lead on 23 points, ahead of Arsenal on 21 and Manchester City on 19. Chelsea and Everton have 17, AFC Bournemouth 16, West Ham United 15, Liverpool and Brighton and Hove Albion 14, with Fulham, Sunderland and Brentford on 13.

Crystal Palace are on 12, Nottingham Forest, Leeds United and Aston Villa 11, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United 10, Burnley 7 and Tottenham Hotspur 3.

Regis Le Bris described the derby double as a big achievement, highlighting the intensity of the first half and the home crowd. He said his side reacted, stayed in the game to adjust at half-time, then showed their plan after the break, noting Newcastle’s high level and that the win means a lot while they want to improve.

The derby lifted spirits after a narrow home defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion. Following the international break, Sunderland focus on a strong finish and their attempt to reach Europe for only the second time, starting with a home meeting with struggling Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, April 12.
