The Premier League has opened an investigation after the Tyne-Wear derby was briefly halted in the second half following a report of alleged discriminatory abuse directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.

On the pitch, Brian Brobbey struck in the 90th minute to give Sunderland a 2-1 win at St James’ Park, completing a derby double after falling behind.

Anthony Gordon’s early finish put Newcastle ahead, before the Black Cats levelled through Chemsdine Talbi 12 minutes after the restart. Brobbey then claimed the late winner, his sixth of the season and Sunderland’s 10th Premier League away goal of the campaign.

The Premier League said the pause followed its on-field anti-discrimination protocol and that the incident at St James’ Park will be fully investigated. It added that racism has no place in the game, offered support to the player and both clubs, and said it will continue working with stakeholders and authorities to ensure inclusive and welcoming stadiums.

Newcastle said it was aware of a racism report made by a visiting player against someone in the crowd during the match. The club stated it does not tolerate discrimination, will work with the authorities to investigate, and will seek to identify and hold any individuals accountable.
