Premier League clubs’ combined pre-tax losses surged more than 600 per cent in a year to £948m for 2024-25, up from £135m, in Deloitte’s Annual Review of Football Finance, according to ExpressAndStar.com.

The review links the spike to heavy transfer spending and fewer sizeable one-off gains, while net debt edged up to £3.6bn from £3.5bn.

Aston Villa were among the few to post a profit, £17m on record revenues of £370m. That figure was boosted by £114m from selling the women’s team and the operating rights to The Warehouse at Villa Park. Without those, Villa would have registered a £97m loss.

In the Championship, aggregate pre-tax losses rose 12 per cent to £355m, with only three clubs in the black for 2024-25. West Bromwich Albion reported a £17m loss, improved from £31m in 2023-24.

The report underlined the gulf between divisions, with Premier League revenue at £6.8bn against £942m in the Championship, the latter down two per cent year on year. Talks on a new, more equitable TV deal between the Premier League and the EFL have stalled since 2024, and the Independent Football Regulator holds backstop powers to impose a settlement if no agreement is reached.

Across Europe, revenues grew 13 per cent to €40.2bn, £34.3bn, in 2024-25, the first season of UEFA’s expanded men’s competitions. Deloitte cautions income could plateau or fall, and its lead partner Tim Bridge warns that simply adding fixtures in an already crowded calendar is not a sustainable answer.
