Ahead of the 2025/26 Premier League season we spoke to fans of all 20 clubs to get their views on the upcoming campaign.
The Football Faithful writer and Fulham fan Ste McGovern answers a few questions about the Cottagers ahead of their opening game.
Fulham need to learn how to close out games. Too often last season we cheaply dropped points in matches we should have won; losing 3-1 to Everton after taking the lead was the prime example, as it cost us a shot at Europe.
Ultimately, it wasn’t just that defeat that shattered our dreams, as we conceded sloppy late goals numerous times and surrendered leads that should have been extended. That said, we also enjoyed some amazing comebacks at the death, beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge for the first time since 1979 and Brentford at home.
Inconsistency was a real issue, too. We bloodied the noses of the bigger clubs, but failed to beat bottom-half teams on 12 occasions, losing half of those fixtures.
Marco Silva might be the best Fulham manager of my lifetime; he’s certainly the best since Roy Hodgson. Year after year he has delivered for us and gotten the most out of his squad, from winning the Championship in style to finally ridding ourselves of the yo-yo club tag and putting us in contention for Europe.
This is now his fifth season in charge, but could also be his last as his contract expires next summer. The owners need to back him in the transfer market and give him a lucrative new deal to fend off potential suitors.
In Marco We Trust.
Once again Fulham are leaving their transfer business until late in the window. We were the last Premier League club to make a permanent signing, bringing in reserve goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte, and that’s all we’ve done.
We missed out on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Everton, and have been linked with the likes of Reiss Nelson, Raheem Sterling and, most recently, Brazilian winger Kevin, but the wheels are moving very slowly on prospective deals.
There have at least been new deals for Kenny Tete and Tom Cairney, as well as professional terms for youngsters Josh King and Seth Ridgeon. But the club need to get the finger out, it’s not good enough.
Josh King could have a breakout year in the Premier League. We saw very little of him last season, but he’s poised to start relatively often after being given some opportunities by Silva in pre-season.
The diminutive attacker is best deployed as a no.10, but he can also play in the no.8 role. He’s got a bit about him, and hopefully we see him show off his skill and quality this term.
I feel like most of our squad is perfectly rated by the general public, but I think Sander Berge deserves more credit for his performances last season.
There was trepidation over the departure of Joao Palhinha last summer, but Berge came in and offered more control in midfield. The Norwegian is cool under pressure and retains possession so well. He formed a surprisingly effective partnership with Sasa Lukic in the middle of the park, and it looks like we’ll be running that again this season.
The game I both anticipate and dread the most is the West London Derby at Stamford Bridge. For so long we go there expecting to lose, but after finally getting that monkey off our back, we can look forward to our trip to Chelsea knowing that it’s far from a foregone conclusion. And we owe them one for that last-minute defeat they inflicted on us at the Cottage in April.
Perhaps this is cheating because he is a former Fulham player, but I love Dan Burn. The lanky defender was released by us after a really poor campaign, truth be told, but his subsequent rise from the third tier back to the Premier League has been enjoyable to watch.
I couldn’t help but be delighted for him last year, winning a trophy with his hometown club and getting his first England call-up. Dan’s the man.
Mid-table beckons. I would say 12th, but we all know Crystal Palace are contractually obliged to finish there, so I’ll go with 13th. Our squad is solid, but I don’t think we’ve built upon it nearly enough to push for top half.
