Premier League Preview: The fans’ view – Newcastle United

What lessons need to be learned from last season?

Get stuff sorted off the pitch. For all the talk of PSR restrictions (which is a massive frustration), going into a summer transfer window without the right recruitment people in place has proven to be a disaster.

We’ve now seen our Director of Football depart in successive summers. There’s a real fear the project is stalling and it’s not just because we can’t splash the cash.

What’s your view on the manager?

Howe has transformed the club. Last season’s cup success will live long in the memory, while we’ve grown from relegation candidates to Champions League qualifiers twice in three years. Taking the next step is the hard part but he’s the right man to guide us.

What’s your verdict on the summer transfer window so far?

It’s been a nightmare, hasn’t it? We’ve been turned down more times than an awkward lad at the school disco. Watching the likes of Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and James Trafford move to Premier League rivals has been tough.

That’s before we’ve even mentioned Alexander Isak. The club might have let him down behind the scenes but the way he’s acted won’t be forgiven. I’m in the camp now where I’d rather just sell and move on. The bridges have been burnt now.

I think we’ve just been voted the least optimistic fanbase ahead of the new season, which says a lot.

On a more positive note, I can see Anthony Elanga thriving under Howe. There’s some serious pace in that forward line.

One player to watch from your club this season?

Lewis Miley. After a breakout season, injuries and an elite midfield group held him back last season. Still just 19, he’s caught the eye in pre-season and will hopefully earn more minutes. The best academy graduate we’ve had in a while.

The most underrated player at your club is…

Fabian Schar. Big Dan Burn was the media darling last season but Schar was just as good. It’s hard to believe he cost us just £3m.

The game you’re most looking forward to is…

There’s only one answer and it’s Sunderland. Back after nine years away, it’ll be great to have the derby back. We’ve not beaten them in the Premier League since 2011 but a lot had changed since then…

What opposition player do you secretly admire?

Goalkeepers get overlooked so I’ll say Alisson. That save at St James’ a couple years back was one of the best I’ve seen.

This season your team will finish…

For all the doom and gloom it’s important to remember we’ve still got a top team. I’ll say fifth, hopefully enough for Champions League football again.
