Sunderland saw an early second-half strike ruled out against Brighton after VAR judged Omar Alderete offside, with the Premier League later releasing an image to explain the call.
According to Sunderland Echo, the Premier League match centre posted the still on social media, saying VAR checked the on-field award and established Alderete was offside in the build-up, so the goal was disallowed.
Alderete had headed Trai Hume’s forward pass into Chris Rigg’s path, and the teenager beat Bart Verbruggen before finishing with his right. Replays showed Alderete had strayed just beyond the line as Hume played the ball. The call looked correct, but frustration soon grew.
Brighton led soon after from a corner that stemmed from Hume’s misdirected backpass. Granit Xhaka could not fully clear the initial delivery, Yankuba Minteh then reached the byline and his mishit cross with his weaker right flew past Ellborg.
Sunderland protested, pointing to Diarra on the turf and to Van Hecke apparently in Ellborg’s eyeline from an offside position when Minteh crossed. A VAR check found no offence and the goal stood. It is understood Van Hecke’s position was reviewed and he was played onside by Ellborg’s position.
Le Bris confirmed before kick-off that Enzo Le Fee and Nilson Angulo had picked up training injuries. He said managing the load was difficult and that Angulo might be out four to six weeks, with Le Fee possibly back sooner, and he hoped for the Newcastle derby.
Granit Xhaka and Brian Brobbey returned to the XI, but Sunderland’s worries deepened when Dan Ballard limped off and Luke O’Nien came on.
