Heading into the 2026 summer transfer window, Dutch midfielder Kees Smit is attracting attention from several top clubs, sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside. The 20-year-old AZ Alkmaar midfielder has openly hinted that he feels ready to test himself at the highest level, and that honesty has only fueled growing interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Over the past season, Smit has steadily built a reputation as one of the Eredivisie’s standout young talents.
His confidence on the ball, sharp football intelligence, and ability to control matches from midfield have caught the attention of scouts across the continent.
Now, with top Premier League sides and elite European teams reportedly monitoring him, his future looks set to be one of the defining stories of the upcoming transfer window.
The midfielder has made 44 appearances for the Dutch side and made ten assists in all competitions.
One of the biggest signs that this transfer saga could turn into something major is the involvement of super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has reportedly been tasked by AZ Alkmaar to manage negotiations.
Whenever Mendes enters the picture, it usually signals a deal of significant scale and in Smit’s case, expectations are already high.
AZ are preparing to demand a fee somewhere between €60 million and €80 million, which would comfortably break records for a Dutch club sale.
That valuation reflects not just his current performances, but his enormous long-term potential.
Smit has impressed with his ability to dictate play from deep midfield areas while also contributing creatively in attacking phases.

Premier League clubs appear particularly interested. Chelsea are believed to view Smit as a long-term development project who could grow into a central midfield role over time.
Manchester United, meanwhile, see him as part of a wider midfield rebuild as they aim to refresh their squad with younger, technically gifted players.
Arsenal and Liverpool have also been linked, largely due to their preference for midfielders who are comfortable in possession and capable of driving play forward.
Even Tottenham Hotspur have occasionally been mentioned as observers of his progress.
Interest isn’t limited to England. In Spain, Barcelona have revived their admiration for the Dutch youngster.
Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund are known for nurturing young talent and have been linked as a potential destination, while Paris Saint-Germain are rumored to be keeping a watchful eye on developments.
From AZ Alkmaar’s perspective, the situation is favourable. Smit remains under contract until 2029, giving the club significant leverage in negotiations.
